The Rugby Football League have today confirmed the teams who will compete in the 2025 Betfred Wheelchair Super League and for the first time in the history of the competition there will be a Scottish representative.
Our application to join the nations elite competition was successful and the Edinburgh Giants will become the first club from Scotland to compete in the competition when we take on current reigning champions Leeds Rhinos in June 2025.
Martyn Gill the club founder had this to say:
"This is massive for the club and the sport in Scotland. We were only established 21 months ago and the majority of the squad are still brand new to the sport. It's exciting but it wouldn't have been possible without the hard work that has gone in off the pitch to build our infrastructure by a dedicated board, volunteers and the generous support of funders and key partners. We still have a long way to go but we have made a great start and hope people within the city buy into what we are trying to create and get behind us".
The 2024 season marked the clubs second season with a large part of the playing group still having played less than 10 games but they are excited by the challenge and fully appreciate it's going to be a huge step up but one they hope to learn from as they gain experience of playing in the league.
Club Captain Connor Blackmore said "It's been an incredible journey so far, we made the Challenge Trophy this year and I didn't think that would be topped but to find out we have been awarded a place in the Super League for 2025 is amazing. The playing group have totally taken to the sport, we all love it and want to continue to improve".
The season launch and 4s tournament will be in April with Round 1 of the Betfred Challenge Cup taking place in May, the draw for this will be made in the first week in January with the Giants name being in the hat.
The Giants Super League season is as follows:
Round 1 - Leeds Rhinos (H)
Round 2 - Wigan Warriors (H)
Round 3 - Halifax Panthers (H)
Round 4 - London Roosters (A)
Round 5 - Hull FC (A)
Round 6 - Bye
Round 7 - Sheffield Eagles (A)
The league structure will then split into a top 4 and bottom 3 with the teams in the top 4 battling for a place in the 2025 Grand Final which will be played in September.
The fixture dates and kick off times are currently being worked through and details will be provided in due course.
